For years Absarokee High School was blessed with the knowledge and exceptional leadership skills of a great man. Known affectionately as "Mr. C" by both students and teachers, Fred Cunningham made a lasting impression on many people during his teaching career. With his genuine enthusiasm for teaching and quick wit, he always kept things interesting and fun for the students. Not only an excellent math and science teacher, Mr. C. was also a successful girls basketball coach. His subtle, yet effective way of demanding excellence from his players led to many district, divisional and state championships.
In the summer of 1997 Mr. C. was involved a tragic kayaking that
took his life. Although Mr. C is gone, his memory still lives on.
In tribute to his legacy, a scholarship fund has been created to
help deserving individuals further their education in the math or
science fields. This scholarship has already helped many AHS students
reach their scholastic goals. The primary fundraiser for the scholarship
is the "Veggie" tournament. Every year during Christmas break, alumni
of AHS gather to celebrate Fred's life by playing in this basketball
tournament held in his honor.
